The Bonny Method
of Guided Imagery and Music

About the Bonny Method

The Bonny Method of Guided Imagery and Music is a holistic, music-based method of therapy. While in a relaxed state the client listens to a program of classical music and allows it to stimulate imagery-- thoughts, emotions, visualizations, memories, or physical sensations. The imagery experience is self-directed, and the role of the therapist is to witness and help deepen the client's involvement with the imagery process.

There are three parts of a GIM session: 1) An initial discussion takes place to check in and review current issues. 2) The therapist helps the client focus internally before listening and imaging to music. The client verbally shares the experience as it takes place and dialogues with the therapist about it. 3) After the music ends, the client and therapist review the imagery together. Sessions typically last 1.5 to 2 hours.

Additional Information

The Bonny Method of GIM has been shown to benefit people who are working through a large variety of issues, including recent or past trauma, medical conditions, grief and loss, emotional health, and self-exploration. It assists with connecting to one's unconscious, and this may lead to improved wellness and integration of mind-body-spirit.

During the review of imagery after the music ends, the client may choose to engage in mandala (circle) drawing as a way to integrate the experience. You can learn more at the Association for Music and Imagery website, and a brief, self-composed article about GIM is available here

Taking the Next Step

Fees: $50 per session. I am unable to accept insurance, but can offer sessions on a sliding scale basis if needed. Discounts for music therapy students are also available upon inquiry.

Free phone consultation- please contact me if you are interested in scheduling an initial meeting. GIM is not appropriate for everyone and both our phone conversation and first session should determine whether it is a good fit for you.

I'm currently offering sessions both in-person and online. Online sessions will work for you if you have a well-working computer with reliable internet connectivity (a wired connection/ethernet cable helps) and a private space from which to call. You will also need earphones and a microphone to ensure a quality sound experience. An inexpensive headset (with both headphones and built-in mic) works well.

In-person sessions are held at my clinic space on the CSU campus. The facility requires that all clients be vaccinated and wear a mask.

About beth

I’ve been a board-certified music therapist since 2003 and currently work at Pathways in Fort Collins/Loveland. Though most of my work has centered around hospice care, I've pursued interests in other areas, including specialized training and experience with neurological rehabilitation. I'm currently an advanced student of the Bonny Method of Guided Imagery and Music and am excited to be using it with people from all walks of life.

I love playing music and spending time outdoors with my family, especially in the mountains.
